"A Praying Friend"
By
Gladys DeMichael
"We pray that your outward lives, which men see, may bring credit to your Master's name, and that you may bring joy to His heart by bearing genuine Christian fruit, and that your knowledge of God may grow yet deeper."
Colossians 1:10 (Phillips)
We sat in the quietness and warmth of the living room on that cold, rainy March evening. Our chairs formed a circle so we could touch each other - two Commissioners, two Lt. Colonels, and two Majors. Rank and appointment were pale; not important. We were friends and we were together to pray. The male Commissioner was a spiritual giant; an outstanding Salvation Army leader, a historian and writer; a man who deeply loved people, especially children. He was a man of great faith and prayer.
The Lord was calling him home and we wanted him to know how much his life brought credit to the Master and the effect of his life on ours. We reminisced, laughed, cried, sang hymns and prayed. It was a holy hour, anointed by a Holy God, made possible through the holy bond of Salvation Army officership. They were eternal moments.
Our verse today is a call to prayer for those we love, and for those who share our officer's covenant. Be a praying friend.
Prayer
Holy God, I pray for my officer sisters and brothers. I pray you will strengthen their faith and love. I pray their lives will bear genuine Christian fruit and that their journey in grace will bring joy to your heart and credit to your matchless name.
Amen.
