Love makes the world go round

Matthew 22:34-40
Listen to the radio, watch TV or movies and one theme is prominent: love – looking for love, losing love, love that hurts and finding the love of your life. With love permeating our society why is there so much hurt, crime, divorce, suicide, loneliness and anger? It could be our ease with which we use the word “love”. I love that sweater, ice cream, actor…not real love at all.
The Bible gives us a different view of love. Matthew speaks of two types of love “phileo” - a brotherly love between family and friends and “agape” – a deep, committed love often referred to as God’s love. Jesus commands us to love God and to love our brothers. He says all the Law and Prophets hang on these two commands. If we live by these two commands then our lives would be so full of love that the bad stuff wouldn’t be able to stick around. 1 Corinthians 13 reminds us what real love looks like. God’s love is active and calls us to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, befriend the lonely and set the prisoners free. This is the kind of love that would make the world go round.
