Words to Grow On

PLACED BY GOD
Isaiah 22:20-24
Hurricanes, typhoons and storms can be frightening and devastating. While serving in Japan we vacationed once in an old wooden cottage perched on a cliff overhanging the sea. One evening, a
typhoon swept in from the ocean bringing strong winds and torrential rain. Roof tiles blew off, walls swayed, storm shutters took flight, windows broke and electric power was lost. To reinforce walls and board windows we needed nails. Flashlight in hand, I scanned walls removing unused nails for the job. It was a long and trying night.
This experience gave me new insight into Isaiah 22:23, AI will drive him as a peg (nail) in a firm place.@ The reference is God=s selection of Eliakim to be administrator for King Hezekiah and is symbolic of the Christian=s relationship and place in the Kingdom of Christ.
In our scripture reading God says, in effect, that he calls his servant, clothes with the uniform of righteousness, strengthens, commits responsibility to, and fastens his servant as a peg (nail) in a firm place. And this for the purpose of holding things together in the family, the church and the community.
