“Your Life Is a Melody

Colossians 3:12-17
Meaning What We Sing
Actually, do we take seriously the meaning of the words which we sing in our hymn books? Consider this:
We sing “Sweet Hour of Prayer” and content ourselves with 10 or 15 minutes each day.
We sing “Onward Christian Soldiers” and wait to be drafted into His Service.
We sing “Oh for a Thousand Tongues” and we don’t use the one we have.
We sing “Blest Be the Tie That Binds” and let the slightest offense sever.
We sing “Serve the Lord with Gladness” and gripe about what we have to do.
We sing “We’re Marching to Zion” and fail to march to Sunday school and Church.
We sing “I Love to Tell the Story” and never mention it to others.
We sing “The Whole Wide World for Jesus” and never invite our neighbors to Church.
Your Life Is a Melody
I wonder if we recognize and appreciate the opportunity and influence we have as women to set the tone for harmony in our household? We cannot control every situation; we are not a panacea for all family problems; we cannot right all wrongs or bring order out of chaos simply by declaring peace and quiet, yet somehow our attitude can be a soothing balm, adding harmony to the home.
If we are cross, the children are cranky and irritable, and the husband, upon his arrival home will sense the tension and feel out of sorts also. If we are happy, the atmosphere will be cheerful, reflecting our attitude.
We may not always feel like singing; we may not be able to carry a tune harmoniously, yet our lives can be like a melody.
Our influence reaches beyond the confines of the home. Whether we feel bereft of talent or are endowed with an abundance of it, we have a melody to sing and share with those around us in our corner of the world.
What is the melody we sing? Psalm 96:1, 2 (The Living Bible): “Sing a new song to the Lord! Sing it everywhere around the world! Sing out His praises! Bless His name. Each day tell someone that He saves.” The melody is God’s love, giving His Son to save mankind from sin.
Colossians reminds us to sing a song of helpfulness (Col. 3:12), harmony (Col. 3:13), hope (Col. 3:16a) and happiness (Col. 3:16b).
“Make my life to be like a melody,
Ever sounding in the days of gain or loss.
Make my life to be like a melody,
Ever sounding out the message of the Cross.
“Jesus in my heart, no discord can arise,
He can make the saddest strain to harmonize;
Saviour let me be like a melody,
Ever sounding out the message of the Cross.”
Sing the song of happiness. Share the melody of God’s love, forgiveness, care and understanding, the joy and happiness of life.
