"Hope of Earth, Joy of Heaven"
Fourth Sunday in Advent – Drama
A MOMENT FOR A MAGI
By Rebecca Phillips
Copyright September 2003
Three men stand across a stage. This piece is meant to be presentational. The characters never interact. It is as though they are all alone, introspective. This piece moves quickly, with pulse. NOTE: If there are not three men available to do this piece, use the version written as a monologue.
ONE
Ever wondered what your purpose is?
TWO
Why you were created?
THREE
And what does the word “destiny” really mean when it comes to you?
ONE
Ever felt ordinary?
TWO
Boring?
THREE
Stuck?
ONE
I used to –
TWO
I often felt like I had no purpose –
THREE
And I firmly believed that extraordinary destinies were for other people. Not me.
Pause.
ALL
Until that moment.
ONE
We had been told – like so many others – that one day the Messiah would come.
TWO
We studied and searched –
THREE
Hoping against all hope –
ALL
That we’d somehow find Him.
ONE
Did I believe He existed?
TWO
Truthfully?
THREE
Sort of.
ONE
We all dream of great things happening to us –
TWO
But most of the time, great things happen around us.
THREE So, I never would have thought that I –
TWO and ONE
I –
ALL
would be the very first one to witness
ONE
The greatest moment of our world –
TWO
then –
THREE
and even now.
ONE We had been looking for Him for what seemed to be an eternity –
TWO
And then, suddenly –
ALL
He found us.
ONE He was in the eye of the star –
TWO
Twinkling –
THREE
Winking at us.
ONE
He was the brilliant light that led our way
ALL
Step by step –
THREE
Moment by moment –
TWO
Right in to His tiny manger –
THREE
Right in to His heart.
ONE
And when I looked in to His tiny face –
TWO
Truly I gazed in to the eyes of The Eternal.
THREE
In Mary’s arms, I saw life in its very beginning
ONE
In the eyes of the Very Beginning.
TWO
And I knew that this was my purpose . . .
ALL
This was my destiny.
THREE
And all I could do was fall to the ground
ONE
On my face
TWO
In absolute humility and awe –
ALL
And worship The One called Messiah.
TWO
No longer was I stuck in the mire of doubt . . .
THREE
I found my Moment.
ONE
In my restless search for the Messiah –
ALL
I was found.
End.
