Fourth Sunday in Advent -

Children’s Five

Based on Luke 2:8-16

Supplies: several large photos of cute infants

Look at all these babies.  They’re bald.  They have no teeth.  They drool.  They can’t carry on a decent conversation beyond “dabagagagaga” and “waaaaaaah”!  But, man, aren’t they cute?  I just love babies!  There is something about them that makes me want to go “dabagagagaga” right back.  I want to kiss their little bald heads and feel their little squishy cheeks and stare at them.

Every baby is special, too.  Sure, they all kind of look the same.  But, ask any new mom or dad and they will tell you how special, how unique, how much a “one of a kind” their baby is.  In fact, if you don’t get away soon enough, they’ll share every little detail of their baby’s birth with you – from that first labor pain to the moment when they looked into their little one’s eyes for that first time.  And, if they’ve really got you held captive, they’ll even update you on every little move their baby makes, including how much they eat, drink, and “go.”  You see, to a parent, that little bundle of joy has just changed their whole world.  And Mom and Dad can’t imagine how everyone else can go on with life as usual.

Of course, there was one baby whose birth changed the whole world for all of us.  You know his name, right?  Jesus.  (Refer to photos.)  Can you imagine how one tiny, squishy, bald, drooly baby could do all that?  Amazing isn’t it?  It’s amazing how the Creator of the whole universe chose to leave his throne in Heaven, to become a human and look like this!  How could he go from being all-powerful to so helpless?  Love.  It all happened because he loved us so much.

(Display verses.)  Look what the angel said to the shepherds in Luke 2:10-11:

“Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”

There are a few really important words that you should see in this verse.  The first is the word, “Savior.”  The angel didn’t just say that a new baby was born.  He said that the baby (Jesus) was a “Savior,” someone who would save the people.  And the second is the phrase “all the people.”  The good news of these verses is that Jesus came to save not only a few people – He came to save all of us.  He came to give us eternal life with Him in Heaven.

2,000 years after the birth of that one tiny baby – we are still celebrating.  We are still remembering that day because it changed the whole world.  That day was special, not just for the proud parents of baby Jesus, but for all of us. (Pray, thanking God for his incredible gift.)
