Drama

PSALM 119 REVISITED

By Rebecca Phillips

Adapted from Psalm 119:9-11,33-37,73, 105

Watch Night / December 31, 2003

Lights up on two characters that stand arm’s length apart. Both face audience and are unaware of the other. Reader’s Theater style. These lines are to move rhythmically. No heavy pauses. Prayerful.

ONE

Your hands made me –

TWO

With your ageless, creative hands, you formed me –

ONE

Sculpted me –

TWO
Intricately designed me

BOTH

In your image.

ONE

You knew me before time’s clock began ticking –

TWO

And with your captivating breath –

ONE
The breath that spoke universes unknown in to existence –

TWO

The breath that shakes the galaxies with thunder –

ONE

The breath that spins stars and planets and trees and butterflies in to place –

TWO

The breath that sings orchestras of perfection in to tiny sparrows –

ONE

And tiny baby gurgles and the secret songs of the wind –

TWO
With that same breath –

BOTH

You spoke my name.

ONE
And you tenderly –

TWO

And passionately

ONE

Breathed purpose

TWO

Destiny

ONE

Into my fragile frame.

TWO

You have chosen me

ONE

Called me –

BOTH

Your own.

ONE

And You have chosen me –

TWO

To call others –

ONE

To challenge others –

TWO

To lead others –

BOTH

To you.

ONE

But Lord, I struggle.

TWO

I see who I am –

ONE

But You see who I can become.

BOTH

Show me.

ONE

How can I keep my way pure?

TWO

Too many distractions bombarding me –

ONE

Misguiding me –longing to destroy me.

TWO

But Lord, Your answer is clear.

ONE

Purity and holiness are found by living according to Your word.

TWO

Your word is a lamp unto my feet – a light unto my path –

BOTH

Lead me on.

ONE

Direct my footsteps according to your word.

TWO

Let no sin rule over me

ONE

I seek you with all my heart.

TWO

Find me.

ONE

Do not let me stray from your commands.

TWO

Guard me.

ONE

I have hidden your word in my heart

TWO

Tucked safely there to protect me.

ONE

To guide me and rescue me

TWO

that I might not sin against you.

ONE

Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees

TWO

And help me to learn deeply – and apply obediently.

ONE

Then and only then can I –

ONE

And will I keep them to the end –

TWO
and draw others to You.

ONE

Give me understanding.

TWO

Clear my mind from the cobwebs of confusion –

ONE

And I will keep your law –

TWO

And obey it

ONE

Keep me far from the path of the wicked –

TWO

And direct me in the path of your commands . . .

ONE

For there I find delight –

TWO

For there, I find You.

ONE

Turn my heart toward your statutes

TWO
 and away from myself –

BOTH

Never toward selfish gain.

ONE

Turn my eyes away from idols –

TWO

away from worthless things.

ONE
Preserve my life

TWO
so that I can ultimately be with you, my hope and my future –

TWO

beside you, my Savior and my God –

ONE

And see you

TWO

truly know you

BOTH

in your fullness and majesty.

ONE

Thank you for choosing me.

TWO

May I only represent you with integrity.

Pause

ONE

And Father –

BOTH

I love you.

Lights.
