The Rehearsal

Invitation

Send an invitation to all members and prospective members inviting them to a wedding program. Remember to include the date, time, location and what to bring.

Decorations

Use items associated with a wedding —bells, streamers and flowers. Set the tables with attractive tablecloths, matching flatware and napkins. A rose with baby’s breath could be used in the middle of each table or ask the women to bring their wedding cake toppers.

As a favor at each place setting, fill netting with mints and tie with ribbon.

Ask the women to bring their wedding albums and framed wedding pictures for a display.

Wedding Dresses

Ahead of time, ask the women to bring their wedding dress. If only a few are available, contact the ARC and borrow some. Assign some of the younger women to model these during the reception.

Gifts

Ask each guest to bring a wrapped gift. These should be items that are needed at the corps. They could be for the corps kitchen, nursery or a children’s program.

Wedding Dresses

As wedding music is played, have the women model the wedding dresses. Ask them to guess the year the dress was worn and who wore it.

Gifts

Ask the woman who has been married the longest to open the gifts that were brought. Have someone record the gifts.

Game

A bride needs a MAN … name them:

1. The man over a fireplace. Mantle

2. The man who directs. Manager

3. The man who cares for nails. Manicurist

4. The man who is crazy. Maniac

5. The man who is a musical instrument. Mandolin

6. The man who is a fruit. Mango

7. The man who kills someone. Manslaughter

8. The man who is a biblical food. Manna

9. The man who is a ship. Man of War

10. The man who is a skin disease. Mange

Refreshments

Serve small sandwiches, wedding cake and punch. The wedding cake can be easily prepared by purchasing two uniquely sized round iced cakes. Set one cake on top of the other. Place silk flowers where the two cakes meet and dress the top of the cake with more silk flowers instead of a cake topper. Many floral candle rings are full enough to make beautiful toppers. Ask the newest bride to cut the wedding cake.

Love

Read John 2:1–11. At the beginning of Christ’s earthly ministry, He attended a very happy and joyous occasion. It was a wedding of two individuals who were pledging their love and devotion to each other. The Scripture does not go into detail about all that took place, but we can assume that it was a time of celebration. In all probability there was music, dancing and good fellowship. Jesus proved by His attendance that He wants people to rejoice and be glad. We may be tempted to think we should not take time out from our important work for social occasions. But maybe these occasions are a part of our calling. There is no better place than at a wedding to celebrate with others. Jesus valued this wedding because it involved people. We need to bring Jesus into our times of pleasure as well as our work.

Toward the end of the wedding festivities Jesus performed His first miracle by changing the water into wine. Weddings in Jesus’ day were week–long celebrations involving great banquets. Often the whole town would be invited to come. To care for all those who were in attendance took careful planning. To run out of wine was very embarrassing for the family. Jesus responded to that heartfelt need. When the master of the banquet tasted the wine he asked why the best wine had been kept until the end. The miracle of changing the water to wine, although great and wonderful, cannot be compared to the marvelous change that is seen in the lives of those who proclaim Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Read 1 Corinthians 13:1–13. This portion of Scripture is often referred to as the love chapter and is read at weddings. In a marriage, it is very important that we daily strive to show this kind of love to our partner. Some days it is hard to be patient, kind, supportive, loyal and trusting. Instead we are quick–tempered or hold grudges against our spouses. We can only practice true love if God helps us set aside our own desires, so that we can give love while expecting nothing in return.

So many people today are confused about love. They think it’s only that romantic feeling for the opposite sex. But love is more than that. It is the greatest of all human qualities and is an attribute of God Himself. Love involves unselfish service to others. It shows that you care about them. This week ask God to help you show His love to all you come in contact with.
